Sausage and Sauerkraut Bake Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb (450 g) smoked sausage or kielbasa, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 jar (24 oz/680 g) sauerkraut, drained
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar (optional)
  • 1 tsp caraway seeds (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) chicken broth or water

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until soft and golden, about 5 minutes.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sautéed onions, drained sauerkraut, brown sugar, and caraway seeds. Mix well.
  4. Spread half of the sauerkraut mixture in a baking dish.
  5. Place the sausage pieces evenly on top of the sauerkraut layer.
  6. Cover with the remaining sauerkraut mixture and pour the chicken broth (or water) over the top.
  7. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  8. After 30 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, allowing the top to brown slightly.
  9. Remove from the oven and serve hot.
